As I’m sure many of you are aware, ALTTAB Radio beams out of the internets and into your earbuds from our nation’s capital, Washington, DC. As you may also be aware, the federal government shut down today. Needless to say, this has been a weird day in the District. It seems than the common experience for federal employees was that they were told to come into work, told to sign a furlough acknowledgment, and told to GTFO. Then day drinking became a common thread as local bars brought out funemployment specials. DC Reynolds– maybe the best bar in Petworth– had a particularly insane offer:
Each day the government is closed, DC Reynolds will open at 11 a.m. and offer buy-one, get-one-free drinks until 9 p.m. You don’t need to be a government worker to take advantage of this outstanding offer.
We’re only one day in though, so everyone still seems to have a somewhat bemused attitude about the whole thing. But I’m not sure how long homeless people go with funny signs. At some point it gets real. And for the sports world, the first bit of realness was announced this afternoon as the Department of Defense cancelled all intercollegiate events for the US Military Academy, Naval Academy, and Air Force Academy until further notice. The Navy-Air Force football game will not be officially cancelled until Thursday, if the shut down goes that far. So that’s a shitty thing.
